Fra YVS (フラ・ヤービス Fura Yābisu),[1] or simply YVS, is the overarching antagonist of the Shaman King Flowers manga and anime series. He is the Shaman King of AD 1500 and thus the predecessor of the current Shaman King, Asakura Hao.[2]

Appearance[]

YVS

YVS' spirit form.

In his compact spirit form, YVS takes on the form of a diminutive golden pyramid with two arms, two legs, and a single, green eye.[3] His true form consists of a hunch-backed humanoid with a white cloak and a horned mask. He appears to wield a scepter with a pyramid resembling his other form at the top.

Personality[]

As he is the immediate predecessor to Hao, he is said to hate him the most out of all of the G8.[2] He believes that the world he has created is already a utopia and is determined to maintain the status quo at any cost. YVS's work and influence is largely to credit for building the foundations of the present Capitalist society, and thus can be viewed as a reflection of his ideals.

As such, YVS is an avaricious individual with an unquenchable love for money, and an unabashed elitist, who vehemently despises those he views as middle or low class, claiming to Yohsuke he despises "mixing up with the plebs". YVS has questionable if not downright, non-existent morals. He approached a younger Yohsuke and took advantage of the boy's desperation, lack of self-esteem, suicidal thoughts and utilized his vulnerabilities to manipulate him and trick him into debt, all the while helping to feed and nurture his hatred for the world, and turning him essentially into his main enforcer.

Even during his time YVS was a notoriously underhanded combatant, who rather than improve his spirit and techniques, engaged in bribery, blackmailing and manipulation in order to rid himself of his competition and crown himself Shaman King, much to the disgust of the Patch Officiants of that generation.

Despite innumerable character flaws, YVS has a surprising amount of forethought, immediately recognizing Hao as the most dangerous threat to his regime and seeking to eliminate him when he was just a reincarnated infant. When this failed, he began preparations for an eventual Flower of Maize, knowing full well that Hao would win the next tournament, and thus improve his chances of victory by usurping him later.

In the Yahabe one-shot, he views money as a food source and is always hungry, cruelly demanding that Yohsuke should pay him before he commits suicide, saying he wouldn't need the money anyway. He reveals to Yohsuke that he was a "God-Class Robot" created by a secret society, and broke away from them no longer wanting to be their pawn.[4]

History[]

Past[]

YVS sleeps

YVS sleeps to become Shaman King.

In AD 1500, YVS participated in and ultimately won the Shaman Fight and was crowned the Shaman King. According to Thorim , instead of growing stronger, YVS won by using underhanded methods, such as paying his subordinates and blackmailed his opponents, using their families, status and lands against them, leading many to withdraw from the tournament and making YVS unpopular amongst the Patch Officiants of that generation.[5] Around this time, he also encountered Asakura Hao.[6]

Sometime after becoming the Shaman King, he was responsible for creating the capitalist society that exists during the present time.[2] At one point, YVS utilized Mr. B's doctrines to control humanity by bending them on purpose. YVS also created Butsu Zones.[7]

YVS's physical skull still existed within after 500 years, as Hao encountered it when he entered the King's Sanctuary to become Shaman King himself.[6]

Zero[]

Yohsuke meets YVS

Yohsuke meets YVS for the first time.

He claims to be a God-Class Robot created by a secret society to control the world; referring to himself as a brand new control system they made, but not wanting to be their pawn he escaped, wishing for freedom. After Kamogawa Yohsuke had considered throwing himself off of the Sky Tower, YVS arrives and demands Yohsuke to give him money, stating it is like a food source for him and since he'd be dead soon anyway he wouldn't need it. Being annoyed at Yohsuke's lack of a response, he threatens him, until Yohsuke reveals he only has 500 yen.

YVS laments that he is poor, but it didn't matter much as he was starving anyway, offering him his Time Warp card. He formally introduces himself and instructs Yohsuke to put the 500 yen coin into a slot in the back of his head. After Yohsuke jumps off of the tower and the card's power takes effect, YVS appears in Yohsuke's room earlier that day, startling Yohsuke. Becoming annoyed at having to repeat himself about his origins to Yohsuke, he relaxes as he acknowledges he is grateful to Yohsuke for ending his hunger, even if only for a measly 500 yen. He asks Yohsuke about what he thinks about the power of his cards, before explaining the powers and details around his cards. He tells Yohsuke to check his pockets as he returned his 500 yen, noting it was only fair as he had turned back time. He shows Yohsuke his X-Ray 125 card and Yohsuke decides to use it to help him win the tournament.

Later, as Yohsuke had arrived to participate in the God-Hand Q Tournament, YVS laughs at how humans are so easily controlled by money, revealing it was a plot of the secret society to control everything, and noting that he did not want to be their tool so he fled for his on freedom. As Yohsuke was battling his second opponent, YVS borrows back his card and panics as he notices that "they" had found him, before taking off with Yohsuke in a hurry. As Yohsuke stopped to confront them, YVS gives him his strongest card, Obelisk to push back and defeat the large force made up of tanks, helicopters, and armed soldiers. later back in Yohsuke's room, YVS mentions that that particular card was worth 100,000,000 dollars, noting that it would be okay if he took his time to pay it back, proclaiming they would be great partners.[4]

Hana and Alumi in destroyed Patch Village

Yohsuke and YVS destroy the Patch Village.

Sometime later, YVS and Yohsuke, with help from the Rapt, destroyed the Patch Village and massacred the Patch Tribe. They intentionally left Alumi Numbirch as the sole survivor. Asakura Hana happened to be there at the time and attacked Yohsuke.[8] After Hana managed to break through the stopped time and killed Yohsuke, Dong Dehon and Shahon arrived to recover YVS and Yohsuke and to erase Hana's memories.[9]

Flowers[]

YVS sat while Kamogawa Yohsuke observed the fight between Amidamaru and Oboro Daikyoh. When Yohsuke praised Amidamaru's abilities, YVS dismissed the samurai as "worthless scum". When they later learned that Hana and Yohane were going to Zion Mall, YVS refused to go himself as he did not like crowds. After Yohsuke acknowledged what YVS had done for him, he promised to participate in the Flower of Maize on his behalf and eliminate any strong rivals in Japan, before it began.[10]

After Hana died, YVS and Yohsuke followed the boy into the Mini Ashura Realm, and Yohsuke allied himself with members of the American Navy from World War II. Anderson flew them to the recreation of Peleliu and crashed his plane into the Patch's Café. Yohsuke demonstrated the power of the YVS Cards by countering Hana's attacks. When Hana drew on his oni power, Yohsuke used YVS' Obelisk to send Hana flying into another part of the Hell.[11] Afterwards, YVS reassembled into his pyramid form, while Yohsuke talked with Sakurai Sakutaro. When the discussion turned violent, Yohsuke put a bullet through Sakutaro's neck, but Sakutaro survived long enough to repeatedly shoot Yohsuke in the head, killing him. YVS fell to the ground, at which point Thorim and the Knights Templar arrived on the beach and recovered YVS and Yohsuke.[12]

As Hao and Yoh's duplicate discuss recent events and Hao's determination to win the Flower of Maize and change the world, YVS suddenly appears and states his determination to defend his work at all costs.[1]
