Sati Saigan (サティ・サイガン) is a fictional character in the Shaman King manga and anime series. She is the leader of the Gandhara group, one of the three great powers in the Shaman Fights. She is also the team leader of Team "Nyorai".

In secret, she is a top-ranking member of Daremoine.[6] After finally meeting with Team YVS, Lucifer renames her Saigan Sachi (西岸サチ).[7]

Appearance[]

Sachi

10-year-old Sati

Sati has long red-brown hair and typically wears an orange dress, probably like Daiei does, as do Buddhist monks. She also wears a crown, as she is apparently a princess and high ranking female monk in the Gandhara order, with a long veil and holds a staff, as carrying medium for her spirit Dainichi Nyorai.

Her casual clothing consists only of a simple two parted white dress.

Personality[]

As normally attributed to Buddhist monks, serenity, inner peace, and meditation should be part of daily life. So, she is no different, as she is serene, peaceful, and seems to be very calm. She heavily believes in a nonviolent approach. She is also very polite and is the only one addressing "Wooden Sword" Ryu as Ryunosuke, his birth name.[8]

As a child, Sati's personality was somewhat the opposite of what it now is as a grown woman. She was rather short-tempered, was shown to have outbursts when annoyed, and was also rather reckless. However, she was also willing to help others, like Kado, whom she intended to try and "cure" from his greed back then.[9]

Abilities and Powers[]

As a child, Sati inadvertently summoned the spirits of various bodhisattva as numerous Over Souls and continuously maintained them for multiple years. This served as extreme training that increased her furyoku.[9] Like the rest of Gandhara, she has undergone training in Hell to strengthen her soul and increase her furyoku, as well as befriending spirits there.[10] The Buddhistic spirits of Gandhara also have furyoku-nullification abilities, enabling the hosting shamans to win battles with minimal violence.[11]

Spirit[]

Sati's first and main Guardian Ghost is Dainichi Nyorai, who is initially manifested through a wooden statue of Senju Kannon.[12] During the Shaman Fight, Sati channels him through a wansen (Buddhist armlet). With Dainichi, she is able to revive the dead[13][14] and to send souls to Hell.[15]

History[]

Past[]

Sati originates from Tokyo, Japan and was born on December 31, 1963. When she was a child, she came to a temple that held a wooden statue of Senju Kannon and talked to it about the injustice in the world, until she was interrupted by the landowners of the temple. She was interrupted by three men claiming to be land sharks and who would throw her out unless she paid them. When Sati attempted to defend the statue and the temple, the landowners offered to take her instead because the statue was worthless. Before they could hurt Sati, Dainichi Nyorai spoke up. Slowly breaking through the statue of Senju Kannon, he threatens to beat the men up with his thousand hands, which scares the three men away.[16]

Shaman Fight Second Round[]

Sati saves Ryu

Sati protects Ryu from Peyote.

As Peyote Diaz and Turbine fought and mortally wounded Umemiya Ryunosuke, Sati and Gandhara arrived and attacked Peyote, as well as subsequently reviving Ryu.[17] Sati explained that although they do not like fighting and killing, they came to help Ryu because they received Asakura Yoh's kind and pure-hearted prayer, and she told Ryu to go thank Yoh. With their job done, Sati and Gandhara prepared to leave.[18]

Later that night, Ryu brought the deceased Chocolove McDonnell and members of Shaft to Sati so she could revive them.[13][19] At Chocolove's request, Gandhara also took away his eyesight.[20]

The next day, Sati and her team, "Nyorai", faced off against and easily defeated Team "Haiti 800", dissolving their Zombie Soldiers.[21]

The next day, Sati and the rest of Gandhara watched as Team "Myooh" faced off against Team "The Ren".[22] As the match ended, Sati thanked the BoZ Brothers and Tao Jun for the information they had provided since it confirmed the boys' qualities to be the Five Elemental Warriors.[23]

Sati sends Yoh to Hell

Sati sends Yoh's soul to Hell for training.

Sati and most of Gandhara then sought out Team "Funbari Onsen", who were training at one of the island's ports. As part of the preparation for the Warriors, Sati challenged Asakura Yoh to a fight, but the X-Laws' attack on Hao forced her to rush the plan. She killed Yoh with a strike and then sent the boy's soul directly to Sanjiva for training.[24] Sati explained her plan to Ryu and Johann Faust VIII: to steal the Five Grand Elemental Spirits and give them to the Five Elemental Warriors, who will ambush Hao while he is sleeping to become the Shaman King. Having overheard Sati's plan, Namari warned her and Ryu about challenging the Patch Officiants. He then announced that X-II's members were dead so Team "Nyorai" would be fighting Team "Kabbalahers" next.[25]

Zang-Ching kills Sati

Hang Zang-Ching kills Sati.

Team "Tsuki-Gumi" then brought the news that all of the X-Laws were dead and that Lyserg's and Jeanne's had been blown up. Hang Zang-Ching mocked Gandhara's foiled plan and threatened to destroy Yoh's body as well. Ryu wanted to kill Zang-Ching, but Sati stood in Ryu's way and insisted that he not kill anyone. However, this left her open to Zang-Ching stabbing her in the back and killing her.[26] After Team "Tsuki-Gumi" killed the rest of Gandhara, Johann revived Yoh and then Sati. Yoh singlehandedly defeated Team "Tsuki-Gumi", and then Hao's followers were all called away.[27]

Sati brought Jeanne's body to the village and revived her so they both could begin reviving the fallen Gandhara members. Team "Myooh" brought news about the success of Team "The Ren". Although Lyserg had not returned yet, Sati announced that they would continue with their plan to retrieve that Grand Elemental Spirits.[14]

After reviving Lyserg, Sati and Jeanne accompanied him to the Patch Stadium, where they interrupted the match between Teams "Funbari Onsen" and "The Ren". Sati announced the withdrawals of Teams "Nyorai" and "Kabbalahers" and return of X-I, bringing an end to the main tournament since there were only four teams remaining.[28]

Invading the Plants[]

Sati faces Enma

Sati faces Enma Daioh.

While the Five Elemental Warriors were fighting their way through the Patch Tribe on , Sati was in Hell and confronted Enma Daioh who was the guardian of the Spirit of Earth.[29] Despite the two knowing each other for long time, Enma Daioh was bound by the contract with the Patch Tribe and refused Sati's request to turn over the Spirit of Earth, so she had no choice but to fight the king.[30]

By the next morning, all four Grand Elemental Spirits had been retrieved, and the Gandhara members boarded the Sphinx so they could deliver the spirits to Mū. However, before they reached the underwater continent, Hao awoke as the Shaman King and destroyed the Sphinx and everyone inside it.[31]

Flowers[]

Following the Shaman Fight, Sati and Asakura Yohken trained Tamamura Tamao and made her into a powerful shaman.[32]

In August 2014, Sati visits Funbari Onsen and revives Asakura Hana's body so that the boy can finish recruiting Sakurai Sakutaro. Afterwards, Sati talks with Tamao and asks her to join another team for the Flower of Maize, but Tamao refuses due to her loyalty to the Asakura Family. As Tamao is questioning Sati's past decision to drop out of the Shaman Fight, they are interrupted by Dainichi reminding Sati about their train to Kyoto, Japan. As she leaves, Sati expresses her wish to fight alongside Tamao in the future.[12]

Niaes stabs Sati

Sati is stabbed by Niaes.

In Kyoto Tower, Sati meets with the rest of Team YVS so that Dainichi can be reunited with the rest of Lucifer.[6] Sati greets the others and then apologizes to Kamogawa Yohsuke for her absence. Lucifer thanks her for returning his final piece;[7] however, inspired by Sati's wish to save everyone, Dainichi attempts to fight against Lucifer.[33] After Senju is defeated and Sati is mocked for his failure, she reveals that it was not a rebellion, but a prayer for their happiness of everyone present and what she learned on her journey in life. When Niaes Varge stabs Sati with her Over Soul and mocks her beliefs, Sati tells Nias that she still believes in a world where everyone can be happy.[34]

Anime/Manga Difference[]

Sati does not appear in the 2001 anime series adaptation and was replaced by Lady Nyorai, an anime original character who shares a similar background and appearance to Sati.

Trivia[]

  • Sati's name and much of her history are based on the protagonist of Hiroyuki Takei's manga series Butsu Zone. She was foretold to awaken in the year 1999. She also had a companion, an Itako Princess named Anna, who was later adapted into Anna Y. Kyouyama.
